Compassion

Compassion

My father, Alfred Chambers was a customer of St. Mary's Bank for years. His checking account had my name on it "just in case" anything happened to him. I never used the account but I knew my name was on it. He passed away in June, 1996. About a month after his passing I went to St. Mary's on Elm Street to take his name off the account. The customer service rep. told me I couldn't do that but I could close out the account and establish a new one with my name on it. At the time I was a customer at another bank in town. I hesitated for a few seconds while I decided what to do. As I sat at her desk holding my father's death certificate and his ATM card she reached over and touched my hand. She sensed my fragile emotional state and gave me a few seconds to regroup. She was so kind and compassionate that I was blown away. This doesn't happen very often in today's world. My plan was to take the money and deposit it in my own account at another bank. I changed my mind and became a St. Mary's customer. I opened a new account in my name. As we did our business I had to show the Death Certificate but I was still holding the ATM card with my dad's signature on it. She reached over to take the card and I must have held on to it so she let me keep it. She told me that it was no longer active but if I wanted to keep it I could. My son still has PopPop's card in his wallet today. I closed my other account and use St. Mary's exclusively. I don't have great wealth but they still make you feel important at St. Mary's.
