In Memory of Shirley

In Memory of Shirley

Several years ago I volunteered for Caregivers, an organization that helps housebound people with a volunteer who gives rides to grocery stores, doctor appointments, etc. I was a volunteer assigned to "Shirley", who had recently lost her husband and had never learned to drive. She was in her seventies when we met and we became more than client and volunteer, we became friends. One day Shirley said to me, "I read in the paper that they are going to open that Credit Union Museum on Notre Dame Avenue." This, of course, is the original home of St. Mary's, the first Credit Union! She went on to tell me how she and her husband lived in an apartment in that very same building when they were newlyweds. She asked if we could go there for the opening so she could see the inside, and of course we went! We had a wonderful visit, especially when Shirley got to go out on the balcony where she remembered sitting with her "kid" sister who visited. We even got to take a photo so she could send a copy to her sister to again share the view that they had enjoyed so many years ago.
