A $2,500 Community Outreach Grant from St. Mary’s Bank, the nation’s first credit union, will benefit the local Bhutanese community.

The funds will be used to purchase furniture and computers for use by the Bhutanese Community of New Hampshire’s Youth Council and Women Council.

The Bhutanese Community of New Hampshire (BCNH) is a community-based organization formed in 2009 with the mission of creating and enduring legacy of Bhutanese heritage for future generations through stewardship of successful integration, and community contributions. Its goal is to contribute to the development and general welfare of the Bhutanese community in the cities of Manchester, Concord and Laconia.

BCNH has introduced two projects to empower and engage disadvantaged youth and women. Both initiatives have attracted much interest in the Bhutanese community, and the organization will use the new office furniture and laptops in support of these programs.

“BCNH is well established in the community as a resource and catalyst to assist refugees advance along a path towards self-reliance and independence,” said BCNH Executive Director Tika Acharya. “In a relatively short period of time, by partnering with larger social service organizations, BCNH leaders have effectively built bridges and acted as cultural brokers in a wide range of settings.”

“Our community is diverse and multicultural, with many populations with specific needs,” said Tom Champagne, St. Mary’s Bank Director of Community Outreach. “We are pleased to support organizations like BCNH, which offers the assistance needed to help individuals and families become successful and part of the community.”
