Funds to Project Learn, an academic success initiative targeting disadvantaged youth

St. Mary’s Bank has provided a $2,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua to support an academic program for disadvantaged youth.

The funds will benefit Project Learn, a program designed to reinforce literacy and help children use and expand classroom knowledge in fun and interesting ways, and a new secondary program, Kids College, an online educational tool incorporating standards-based content items in math, literacy and science to create individualized, effective learning experiences.

Up to 200 children will be participating in these programs, says Patricia Casey, Director of Advancement at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua.

“The grant from St. Mary’s will enhance the quality of Project Learn components such as the Kids College and Science of Sports programs, assist with the purchase of supplies, and provide opportunities for our members to participate in special activities such as career shadow days and internships,” said Casey, who added, “Quality, hands-on, affordable programs like these are not available to many of our members through any other venue.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua annually serves more than 3,400 youths ages 5 through 18, the majority living in low income households and half coming from single parent homes.  “For these kids, the Club is a haven, open from after school and all day in the summer,” Casey said.
“Kids need a safe place to learn and grow, and we applaud the efforts of the Boys & Girls Club in providing educational opportunities for these children,” said Tom Champagne, St. Mary’s Bank Director of Community Outreach. “We are pleased to be able to provide the support needed to support these worthwhile educational initiatives.”
