Card Fraud

Card information can be captured many ways, including by skimming devices placed on ATMs or through handheld devices. Card information can also be captured by entering it onto suspect websites. Ways to help prevent card fraud are listed below.

  • When at an ATM, before inserting your card, check the ATM card reader to make sure it does not appear to have been tampered with. Pull on the card insert;, look for scratch marks.
  • Activate card alerts for when your card is used, for transactions over a certain dollar amount, and to prevent international charges.
  • If you are not getting cash when using your card (e.g., using your card at a gas pump or just to make a purchase), always select the “Credit” option so you don’t need to enter your PIN. This keeps your card more secure.
  • If you do need to enter your PIN, cover your hand as you enter your PIN so that a concealed camera or bystander cannot see you entering your PIN.
  • Cancel cards that you do not use, and monitor the cards you do use by reviewing your monthly statements in a timely manner.
  • Don’t provide the three-digit security code from the back of the card to anyone by phone or email unless you initiated the contact and know whom you are doing business with.
  • Memorize your PIN. Do not write it down or keep it in your wallet or purse along with your card.
  • Remember, no legitimate caller will ever ask for your PIN.
